Ms. McDermott's Chemistry Students' Activities Page

Here is where students can find their assignments that are planned for the week. Each day has a detailed description of what activities are assigned and what is expected from the student for that day.

Student Activities for the Week of September 13th to September 17th:

Monday: September 13th - Intro to the Periodic Table

Today you are going to be learning about the history of the Periodic Table. Read through this
Brief History of the Development of the Periodic Table and then make your own quiz. When your quiz is complete, trade with your neighbor and see how well you can do on your classmates quiz.

When you have your classmates quiz, you must then create a timeline on Microsoft Power Point. You are required to have at least 8 events and their dates.

You may also want to these terms from the periodic table.

Tuesday: September 14th - Exploring the Elements

After a brief explanation of what elements are and how to calculate the protons, neutrons, electrons, atomic mass and atomic number; you will spend the day exploring this Periodic Table. Click on each of the elements and read about them. You will need to know the elements name when given the symbol so you may want to pay attention to that. After you have completed looking at each element fill out these Element Trading Cards. Follow the directions for how to fill them out. You must make 20 of these cards with the elements of your choice.Yesterday there was a link of terms

When you are done with your cards work on these worksheets.

Whatever is not completed in class is due by Friday.

Wednesday: September 15th - Groups

Now that you have a basic understanding of the elements in the Periodic Table we are going to discus how it is divided.

In groups, watch this video about the different groups (families) of the periodic table. Your group will be assigned a specific family from the Periodic Table and must create a Power-Point presentation for the assigned family of elements. Be specific when creating your Power-Point because tomorrow your group must present your Power-Point. It is your responsibility as a group to give enough information about the specific family so your classmates will be able to distinguish which elements belong in each group.

Here are some more useful sites that will aid in the creation of the Power-Point.
Group Numbers
Periodic Law and Families

Thursday: September 16th - Presentations
Today is the day designated for the presentations of the different families of the Periodic Table. Watch and listen carefully to the presentations. Take notes on what the differences of each are. Be prepared and detailed enough to compare two of the families.

When the presentations are complete, use the Inspiration Software to create a Ven-Diagram comparing two of the families from the Periodic Table. You may not use the family that your group was assigned, you must choose two different ones.

Friday: September 17th - Review

Complete these online quizzes:
Fun Brain
The Periodic Table Quiz

Make sure you write down your scores and turn them into the teacher.
When you have completed these, you have the rest of the period to review the elements (use your Element Trading Cards) or any other topics that we learned this week. You can work in pairs, groups or by yourself. Use this time diligently to study.

You will have a test on everything that was covered this week on Monday. You have the weekend to study and
make sure you have clear understanding of the Periodic Table.
